BOTOX Therapeutic

Botox Therapeutic Treatments in Vancouver

The Carruthers Cosmetic Clinics are well known in the Vancouver cosmetic surgery community and around the world for their pioneering of Botox Therapeutic and Cosmetic treatments and other procedures. Dr. Jean Carruthers, along with her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, pioneered the cosmetic use of Botulinum A Exotoxin (Botox) and have remained at the forefront of research and teaching about this procedure. Much of their research has helped to expand the use of Botox beyond cosmetic procedures. Botox has a variety of uses, one of the most popular being for the therapeutic treatment of pain.

Common Botox Therapeutic Treatments for Pain

  • migraines
  • tension headaches
  • post-herpetic neuralgia
  • back and limb pain
  • muscle spasm
  • cervical dystonias

How It Works

The amounts of Botox used to treat the pain are far less in most instances then it would be to treat muscle spasm and pain from more serious medical conditions such as cervical dystonias. When injecting Botox for migraines, the treatment is done symmetrically in the facial area and using the technique of “following the pain” in the non-facial areas.

For example, the muscles at the back of the neck (suboccipital musculature), the trapezius’, the rhomboids, and also the internal pterygoids inside the mouth can be injected with Botox to relieve tension which may trigger or contribute to migraine episodes. Dr. Alastair Carruthers treats migraines and tension headaches, and muscles soreness or stiffness with Botox in his practice.

Other uses for Botox Therapeutic in the medical community include: benign essential blepharospasm, cervical dystonia, limb spasticity, over-active bladder and club foot.
