Botox Cosmetic ™

Dr. Jean Carruthers is one of the premier cosmetic surgery physicians in Vancouver performing Botox Cosmetic™ treatments.  With her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, she pioneered the cosmetic use of botulinum A exotoxin (Botox Cosmetic™) and has remained at the forefront of research and teaching about this procedure. Drs Alastair and Jean Carruthers are well known in the Vancouver cosmetic surgery community and around the world for their pioneering of Botox Cosmetic™ treatments and other procedures.

Botox Cosmetic™ is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure world wide and it is one of the most popular treatments in our Vancouver clinic as well.  There is very little discomfort with its injection and the treatment can be individualized to the anatomy and the individualist esthetic requirements of a particular subject.

Botox Cosmetic™ started as a treatment for brow furrows and glabellar furrows.  It soon was realized that the brows would also elevate when the brow depressor muscles were treated with BOTOX, giving the eyes a more open, lifted look.  Botox Cosmetic™ has also been used to treat horizontal forehead lines, crows feet, and in the mid face over active zygomaiticus major, risorius, and masseter muscles.  In addition, the peri-oral use of Botox Cosmetic™ included treating the orbicularis oris or vertical lip lines, depressor anguli oris (DAOs) for treatment of the mouth frown, and in the mentalis to treat the apple dumpling chin. Botox Cosmetic™ is also commonly used to treat vertical platysmal bands in the neck.

Botox Cosmetic™ can be used on its own, or can be combined with the use of soft tissue fillers to achieve optimal cosmetic results in areas such as the lateral tails of the eyebrows, in the preceptal skin of the upper lids, under the inferior crows feet, in the malar area, and also in the peri-oral region including in the lips and in the nasal-labial and melomental folds (marionette lines).

Botox Cosmetic™ can also be used with lasers and other energy-based devices in order to improve the tone and texture of the skin.  We very often use Botox Cosmetic™ with treatments that are light based such as Intense Pulsed Light (or IPL), but we also use it with Thermage radiofrequency treatments and pixelated CO2 laser treatments such as the UltraPulse Encore’s Deep FX and Active FX.

Cosmetic surgery is another aspect of treatment that combines well with Botox Cosmetic™. About 80% of middle aged women have one brow slightly higher than the other.  Before the surgical procedure is performed, Botox Cosmetic™ can be used to equalize the height of the brows so that a perfect upper lid blepharoplasty can be performed.  Botox Cosmetic™ also reduces the size of scars by providing a relaxed, tension-free environment during the healing process. Therefore, in our face lift procedures, we use Botox Cosmetic™ in the platysma muscle in order to stop drag on the incision line so that the scar is very refined and unobtrusive.  We also use Botox Cosmetic™ when doing lower eyelid blepharoplasty repairs and in peri-oral surgical procedures.

Botox Cosmetic™ usually last 3-4 months and retreatment may then be entertained.
